How to Play the Mafia Game

The first step in playing the mafia game is assigning roles for each player. Make sure to keep these secret until the start of the game. The roles are: detective, doctor, narrator, and civilians. Each role has a unique function. The detective can point to someone they think is in the mafia and ask “Do you want to know?”

They also can talk about recent events that occurred. This is an important part of the game as it helps players to figure out who’s in the mafia. They can accuse a player of being in the mafia, but this must be seconded by another player. The accused player must explain why they are accusing the other player and a vote will take place if he/she is guilty or not.

During the day, players act as civilians. They try to figure out who is in the mafia by talking and acting suspicious. They also watch for tells, such as nervous laughs or silly awkward things.

At night, the narrator will awaken each role and ask them who they would like to kill or save. For the mafia, this is their turn to eliminate a townperson; for the doctor and sheriffs, it’s their turn to choose a player they think is in the mafia to save.

If a player is selected to be killed or saved, the moderator will silently pick one player and have them silently signal whether they are mafia or not by either a finger point or a nod of the head. The moderator will then recap the round with a story about how the innocent was killed or saved.

Innocent roles can include: Lycan, Cupid, and the Lovers. The Lycan is an innocent or mafioso; they appear as Mafia during the night and if they die, the Mafia members are revealed.

Lovers can be killed immediately or they can get a heart attack and die, depending on how they are played. They can be chosen to be Lovers by the moderator on the first night or they can be picked by their partner in the mafia and then told of their role.

During the day, they can be accused of being in the mafia or can be voted out by other players. This is a good role to have if you’re afraid of being eliminated in the night.

They can also be a “bodyguard” for an innocent player who cannot be voted out the next townhall meeting. This is a great way to protect your friends from being eliminated in the mafia!

The doctor can save a townsperson each night, but can’t save themselves. They can investigate a player they think is in the mafia but they cannot do so until the day cycle is over. If the doctor is able to save the right player, that person will be brought back into the game and they are given a chance to save someone else in a future night.
